I haven't fished there in several years, but I had pretty good luck last time.
DeSoto is a great way to spend time in nature. the refuge has wonderful indoor and outdoor space, perfect for visiting year round. The Bertrand artifact exhibit is a must-see, and the exhibit changes periodically. Grounds and trails are very well maintained.
DeSoto is a federal park just outside of town that borders the Missouri river. The park personnel keep the grounds very well maintained and the folks in the office are always helpful.
After visiting the museum, we drove to the excavation site of the Bertrand. Short walk to the site. The hull is still buried there.
While in the lot, we saw eagles standing at the edge of the water, one eagle had a fish. What followed was all of them wanting that fish, or a piece of it. 2 steals by different eagles, the last one taking it, then flying off into the woods for dining. Surprised at that much activity for a muggy day.
The day we visited was hot and humid.
There is a daily fee of or you can get an annual pass that is good for all federal parks. I believe there is also a discount for military/retired military for the annual pass.
Simply stunning! The Bertrand exhibit is worth it alone but when you add the beautiful nature trails this place is amazing. For those not interested in exploring the trails, the roads will get you some good views, too.
Fun place to watch birds. Nice steamboat musseum
